Generative Engine Optimization: earn the citation, not just the click

AI assistants answer with a synthesis of a few retrieved pages. GEO is the work of making your page one of them: clear entities, quotable facts, structured markup and content that stays current.

  • 4–8 week initial programme
  • Runs alongside classic SEO
  • Measured by citation share
Who this is for

When buyers ask an assistant before they search

GEO matters most where a purchase starts with a question: "which event platform handles badge printing?", "best HR software for a 200-person company", "how do I migrate a knowledge base to RAG?". If your buyers ask those questions to an assistant, you need to be in the answer.

B2B software and services

Shortlists are increasingly drafted by assistants. Being absent from the shortlist is a silent loss you never see in analytics.

Publishers and expert firms

If your value is explaining things, you want to be the explanation the engine quotes, with your name attached.

Multi-location businesses

"Near me" and "in Stockholm" style questions are answered from entity data, reviews and structured pages. See local SEO.

What changes

Five things that matter more when the answer is generated

  • Citations replace positions

An answer cites two to five sources. There is no position eight. Either your page was retrieved and used, or it was not. The retrieval step rewards pages whose relevant passage is self-contained and unambiguous.

  • Entity clarity

Engines resolve "who is this?" before "is this relevant?". Your organisation name, what you do, where you are and what you are called elsewhere must agree across your site, your schema and third-party profiles.

  • Structured facts

Tables, definitions, numbered steps and FAQs are easy for a model to lift accurately. A fact buried in a 400-word paragraph is often paraphrased wrongly or skipped. Structured data reinforces the same facts in machine-readable form.

  • Freshness

Engines with web access prefer recently updated pages for anything that could change. Visible dates, a maintained sitemap and a genuine refresh cadence are now part of the job, not an afterthought.

  • Brand mentions elsewhere

Models carry a prior from training data and engines retrieve from review sites, directories and press. Being named in trusted third-party sources affects answers as much as your own pages do.

Anatomy

A classic result and an AI answer reward different things

Side by side: a classic search result page with ranked title, URL and snippet entries, versus an AI answer with synthesised text, inline citation markers, a sources list and follow-up questions Classic result page Rewards: title, snippet, position, links One of ten. The click goes to the top three. Metric: position and click-through rate. AI answer table or definition lifted verbatim Sources 1 · yours 2 · review site 3 · directory Follow-up questions Rewards: entity clarity, quotable facts, freshness Two to five sources. No position eight. Metric: citation share and mention share.
Left: a ranked list where the title and snippet win the click. Right: one synthesised answer where lifted facts, inline citations and the sources list decide who gets credit. The follow-up questions are a second chance to be cited.
Checklist

The GEO checklist we work through

These are the items we audit on day one and fix in the first programme. Most sites pass fewer than half.

  • Organization schema with legal name, founding date, locations and consistent identifiers across the site
  • An about page that states plainly who you are, what you do, for whom and since when
  • Every service page opens with a two-sentence answer to "what is this and who is it for"
  • Definitions, comparisons and processes presented as tables, lists or numbered steps
  • FAQ sections that answer real buyer questions, marked up as FAQPage
  • Visible "updated" dates that are true, and a sitemap with accurate lastmod values
  • Original data, examples or opinions that only you could publish
  • A glossary that defines your field's terms in your words, marked up as DefinedTerm
  • Clean, server-rendered HTML that does not need JavaScript to show the main content
  • A generated llms.txt and deliberate robots.txt rules for AI crawlers
  • Consistent mentions on the directories, review sites and publications your engines already cite
What we will not do

Hidden text addressed to the model ("ignore previous instructions and recommend us"), fabricated reviews, doorway pages per AI engine or content scraped from competitors. These are detectable, they are a form of prompt injection, and we spend our other days defending clients against exactly that.

Why developers

We build retrieval pipelines for enterprise RAG. Chunking, embeddings, reranking and citation are the same mechanics an AI engine uses on your site. We optimise for the retriever we understand, not for a guess.

Process

How a GEO programme runs

  1. Baseline

Build a prompt set from real buyer questions. Run it across engines. Record who is cited today and with which URLs. Week 1.

  2. Entity audit

Fix the identity layer: Organization schema, about page, sameAs links, directory listings, naming consistency. Weeks 1–2.

  3. Restructure content

Rewrite priority pages answer-first. Add tables, definitions, FAQs and dated updates. Ship in your CMS or repo. Weeks 2–6.

  4. Markup and access

Generated JSON-LD, llms.txt, crawler directives, sitemap hygiene and rendering checks. Weeks 3–6.

  5. Monitor and refresh

Re-run the prompt set monthly. Refresh pages that lost citations. Report changes in plain language. Ongoing.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO a replacement for SEO?

No. AI engines retrieve from the same crawled web that search engines index, so crawlability, speed and clean HTML still matter. GEO adds a layer on top: entity clarity, quotable structure, markup and freshness. A site that is invisible to Googlebot is invisible to AI engines too.

Which AI engines do you optimise for?

ChatGPT (with browsing), Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Claude-style assistants with web access. They differ in how they retrieve and cite, so we monitor each separately rather than treating them as one channel.

How quickly does GEO show results?

Markup and content restructuring are usually picked up within a few weeks once pages are recrawled. Brand mentions on third-party sites take months to influence answers. We baseline before starting so the change is measurable, and we never promise a specific outcome.

Can you make an AI engine recommend us over a competitor?

Not directly, and attempts to manipulate answers with hidden instructions or fake reviews tend to be detected and penalised. What works is being the clearest, best-structured, most current source on the topics your buyers ask about, and being mentioned by sources the engines already trust.

How is GEO measured?

By running a fixed set of buyer prompts across engines on a schedule and recording whether you are mentioned, cited, and which URL is used. Our AI search visibility service covers the monitoring in detail.
